Initialized as GPT and formatted as NTFS in windows, we get a useable space of 745GB.

CrystalDiskInfo

CrystalDiskInfo shows us connected at the maximum PCIe 4.0 x4 bus speed while utilizing NVMe 1.3.

SpecWorkstation 3.1

The SPECworkstation 3.1 benchmark includes more than 30 workloads containing nearly 140 tests that exercise CPU, graphics, I/O, and memory bandwidth. The updates in version 3.1 offer significant improvements in how workloads partition and distribute threads across multi-core CPUs, expand support for next-generation GPUs, and add features such as vectorization that leverage advanced CPU hardware to accelerate performance.

The SpecWorkstation 3.1 Storage subsystem score really shows the performance delta between the Optane SSD DC P5800X and even flagship consumer NAND flash drives like the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus. This really shows that productivity-focused tasks can leverage the low latency and crazy fast speeds Optane brings.

Looking at the different categories tested, the Optane P5800X just decimates everything NAND-based with ease. The media category includes things like video transcoding with something like Handbrake, and the Development category includes things like fluid simulations from something like OpenFOAM, things you could easily use in a workstation or server with the Optane P5800X.

CrystalDiskMark 7.0

“CrystalDiskMark is designed to quickly test the performance of your hard drives. Currently, the program allows measuring sequential and random read/write speeds.”

Intel Optane SSD DC P5800X 800GB SSD Review 7 Data Center, DC, Intel, Optane, P5800X

Intel’s SSD DC P5800X Is very fast, fast enough that the CPU in your system can actually bottleneck its performance. Here, we see the very high core count on the AMD Ryzen 5950X lends itself to higher sequential transfers, but the lower latency monolithic architecture of Intel allows lower latency to the drive which results in much higher random performance.

Flipping over to the real-world testing profile, we get a bit better look at what is going on. Running from an Intel system, the P5800X achieves latencies around 20% lower than from AMD. I/O Operations per second is notably higher On Intel as well with reads almost hitting the 100K mark.

Comparatively, even when Running from a red system, the P5800X leads on write IOPS and just decimates on read operations per second.

Looking at just latency, Intel’s Optane SSD DC P5800K holds a firm lead in write latency over even higher-end consumer drives and its own NAND-based SSD’s. When we get to read latency, the difference is just laughable with what is approaching an order of magnitude faster access times. Again, we see Intel holding a notable lead with access times 20%+ shorter than AMD.

ATTO Disk Benchmark

Intel Optane SSD DC P5800X 800GB SSD Review 13 Data Center, DC, Intel, Optane, P5800X

At higher I/O sizes there is not much difference to see in ATTO although reads come in slightly higher on the AMD testbed. If you look closely at the lower I/O sizes, the Intel starts out and maintains a significant lead until 64KB I/O Size.

Anvil’s Storage Utilities

Intel Optane SSD DC P5800X 800GB SSD Review 15 Data Center, DC, Intel, Optane, P5800X

Anvil once again shows overall very low latencies across the board with Intel holding a slight edge over the AMD platform. The Latencies and IOPS here are easily the best we’ve ever seen, and there isn’t a NAND drive currently on the market that can even come close.

PCMark 10

Intel Optane SSD DC P5800X 800GB SSD Review 16 Data Center, DC, Intel, Optane, P5800X

PCMark 10 runs a wide gamut of real-world testing on drives from video editing to web browsing. Intel’s Optane P5800X just obliterates every testing category. We had to significantly expand our chart to give it enough room for throughputs reaching well into the GB/s range.
